Who says kids are only texting or sitting in front of their computers? For the 21st consecutive year, participation in high school sports has increased and set a record. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, 7,628,377 boys and girls competed in the 2009-10 school year. For boys, it was 4,455,740 and girls 3,172,637. From the previous year, boys were up by 33,078, girls 58,546. Overall participation was 55.1 percent. Said NFHS executive director Bob Gardner: “This reinforces the values that high school sports provide as part of the education of our students.”
