Boulder County officials have requested that the U.S. Supreme Court review its legal battle with a church over the church’s plans to double its campus near Niwot.
The county said in its petition that its legal dispute with Rocky Mountain Christian Church has implications for local governments around the country.
County commissioners denied the church’s request to expand in 2006. The church successfully sued under the federal Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, which protects churches from discriminatory land-use laws.
County officials say local governments nationwide need the Supreme Court’s guidance on how to apply the federal land-use law. The petition was filed by mail Friday.
