WELLINGTON, New Zealand — A strong earthquake hit the southern New Zealand city of Christchurch today, cutting power and phone services and sending some residents running into the streets.
New Zealand’s geological agency said the magnitude 5 quake was centered 6 miles southwest of the city and just 5 miles below the surface. It was one of many aftershocks that hit the city after a magnitude-7 quake on Sept. 4.
