“Travel Health Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before You Leave, While You’re Away, After You’re Back” ($14.95, Firefly)

Dr. Mark Wise, the author of this very useful book, does not mean to alarm anyone. He just wants to alert readers to the very real risks related to travel and advise them on how to reduce those risks. He also describes the best way to handle any problems that arise. Use your common sense and be proactive, he writes. Because most troubles involve digestive issues, he recommends that travelers “boil it, bottle it, filter it, purify it, peel it, cook it . . . or forget it.” He divides the book into three sections, as referred to in the title: before you leave, while you’re away and after you’re back. Topics include vaccinations (routine, required and recommended); what may occur while traveling (motion sickness, insect bites); and ailments that linger after returning home (stomach and skin troubles). The guide concludes with an appendix of infectious diseases and conditions. Chicago Tribune
