“Sex and the City 2”
*** (out of 4)
It’s fine to take the gals out of the city once in a while. But taking the city — New York, that is — out of the equation and tossing in Abu Dhabi creates more trouble than it’s worth. “SATC 2” has enough laughs and relationship snags to keep fans of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda tittering. (The sequel begins with a fab wedding.) But writer-director Michael Patrick King misjudges our interest in hearing the women roar in the “New Middle East.” Aidan (John Corbett) appears like a mirage, which adds to Carrie’s married-life confusion. R. 2 hours, 27 minutes. Lisa Kennedy
“Winter’s Bone”
***1/2 (out of 4)
In Debra Granik’s gloriously assured adaptation of Daniel Woodrell’s novel, an unforgettable 17-year-old named Ree Dolly embarks on a quest to find her bail-hopping father. It’s a search that no one wants to assist her in. Not her uncle Teardrop, not her distant kin, not the law. It’s an Ozark story with Greek dramatic ambitions. Played with clean determination by Jennifer Lawrence, Ree is Antigone, but with the gumption to survive. John Hawkes is grim and good as Teardrop. R. 1 hour, 40 minutes. Lisa Kennedy
