BOULDER, Colo.—The U.S. Department of Agriculture is providing $1.4 million to help restore land burnt in a wildfire west of Boulder.

Harris Sherman, the USDA undersecretary overseeing the Forest Service, recently toured the area where a wildfire in September scorched nearly 10 square miles and destroyed 169 homes.

State officials say the funds will help with efforts to stabilize the natural resources damaged in the fire. An initial environmental assessment by federal and local agencies showed immediate threats to soil, vegetation, wildlife, water and infrastructure.

Among the dangers is flooding or sediment in waterways if the scorched soil is less absorbent or vegetation that could stop flooding is gone.
