The eastbound lanes of U.S. 36 were reopened about three hours after they were shut down following a car-pedestrian accident, authorities say.

The highway had been closed after a person wandered onto the highway and was fatally struck by a vehicle at 7:01 p.m., Trooper Nate Reid said.

“He walked or stumbled onto the lane,” Reid said.

The Colorado Department of Transportation had reported that motorists should expect major delays until the accident scene is cleared.

Traffic was being diverted onto McCaslin Boulevard, University of Colorado journalism student Kelsi Cooke posted to her Twitter account.

Until she reached the boulevard, traffic was traveling about 5 mph, Cooke wrote.

It’s unclear why the man was on the highway.
