NEW YORK—Colorado Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez has been named the player of the year by his peers.

Major League baseball players handed out the award to him Friday after a season in which the slugger led the National League in hitting (.336), finished second in RBIs (117) and fourth in homers (34).

Opposing pitchers had to pick their poison between the 25-year-old Gonzalez and shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, who was hitting behind “CarGo” in the order and crushed a franchise-best 15 homers in September.

Despite MVP-worthy performances from Gonzalez and Tulowitzki, along with a sensational year by ace Ubaldo Jimenez, the Rockies finished just short in their quest for a third playoff berth in four years.
