DENVER—The Denver Museum of Nature and Science has an agreement with officials in Snowmass Village to excavate a site where the bones of several mammoths and a mastodon tooth have been found.
The museum said Friday that it reached an agreement with the Snowmass Water and Sanitation District for the donation of the fossils. The museum plans to start excavating the bones Tuesday.
The bones of a single juvenile Colombian mammoth were discovered by a bulldozer operator Oct. 14 working on expansion of a reservoir. About 25 percent of the original mammoth’s bones were unearthed.
Museum officials say more mammoths and the tooth of a mastodon have been found at the Snowman Village site. They say its unusual to find more than one mammoth at a single site.
