PORTLAND, Ore. — A Bulgarian man who used a name stolen from a slain Ohio boy to work for Oregon’s state liquor agency has pleaded guilty to passport fraud and aggravated identity theft.
The Oregonian reported that 36-year-old Doitchin Krastev faces a mandatory minimum sentence of two years in federal prison.
Krastev came to the U.S. as a high school student in the 1990s but vanished after dropping out of college. He was hired by the Oregon Liquor Control Commission as an investigator in 2002 using the name Jason Robert Evers.
The name was taken from a 3-year-old boy killed in 1982 — when Krastev was in Bulgaria. The stolen identity was discovered by U.S. Diplomatic Security Service agents. Krastev used to live in Colorado. A friend’s tip helped lead to his arrest.
