FORT CARSON, Colo.—Fort Carson’s commander has formally taken responsibility for U.S. military units in northern Iraq.

Maj. Gen. David G. Perkins, commander of Fort Carson’s 4th Infantry Division, assumed responsibility for seven provinces in northern Iraq on Nov. 4.

Perkins and about 800 soldiers from the division’s headquarters unit began deploying to Iraq from Fort Carson in September.

About 3,800 other Fort Carson soldiers are in southern Iraq, and an equal number are in Afghanistan.
