COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—At least five people were injured late Tuesday when a school bus carrying basketball players slid off an icy road into a ditch east of Colorado Springs.
State Trooper Nate Reid said the crash was reported around 9:40 p.m. One person was flown by helicopter to an area hospital.
There were also reports of people with ankle and leg injuries as well as cuts and bruises, according to The Gazette in Colorado Springs.
Reid said there were about 30 people on the bus from the Calhan School District. About 13 of the passengers were children.
The bus was carrying basketball players from Calhan Middle School returning from a game in Colorado Springs, according to The Gazette.
“It sounds like the weather may have played into this,” Reid said.
It was snowing in the area.
The accident occurred on U.S. 24 about 25 miles east of Colorado Springs and 80 miles southeast of Denver.
