We’ve got a lot of great stuff this week, so let’s get right to it.
Lil Sum’n Sum’n is husband-and-wife duo Gil Gonzalez (of INTI and world rock collective ) and Lisa Wimberger (of multimedia performance act , indulging their love for the world’s seemingly innumerable percussion instruments. The pair’s new disc, “Into the Deep” — to be released on Thursday, Nov. 18 at the Bluebird Theater — showcases artists at the top of their games.
Rather than devolving into pointless drum circle self-indulgence or spacing out in a peyote-induced haze, Gonzalez and Wimberger use hang drums, tablas, doumbeks, dounouns, congas, ocean drums, frame drums, pots and pans, shakers, udus, drones, ballaphones, and tap dancing to create actual songs that tell stories and guide journeys. Gonzalez has been a drummer since he was a teen and Wimberger came to percussion through dance, but both draw on Middle Eastern, Afro-Cuban, African and American rhythms to craft their captivating compositions. For a stunning example of this duo’s artistry, steal “Bamsa” right now. Then make sure to catch . Tickets are just $10 in advance, $12 at the door.
From primitive, handmade rhythms to hard-hitting hip-hop beats, we now turn our attention to the Diamond Boiz clique, a group made up of Dyalekt, é and Zome. The boys are extremely busy this month. Each is releasing a full-length album, and they’ve agreed to share a single from each EXCLUSIVELY with Reverb readers.
The first record out of the gate was Zome’s. Titled “Diamond in the Flesh,” the album is a 14-track monster with guest spots and production from Es Nine and A.V.I.U.S. of ), Julox, Mane Rok, and more. “Diamond in the Flesh” was released on Nov. 8 and is available as a free download from the . Before you commit to the whole thing, you’ll probably want to steal the 70s throwback track, “So Legit.”
Today, é will release his contribution to the November Diamond Boiz blitz. “Advanced Placement” should be posted on the website shortly, along with two singles, “Afterschool Medley” and “What I’m Doin.” What’s that? You say you want to steal “What I’m Doin” right now, exclusively from Reverb and Steal This Track? Well, ok.
Diamond Boiz ringleader Dyalekt brings up the rear on the weekly release schedule. You might remember that , and the two singles we’ve heard off his album, “November Hates Me,” fulfill the promise of that smooth-and-rough-in-all-the-right-places platter. Look for the full-length to hit the Diamond Boiz website next Monday, Nov. 22. In the meantime, steal the critic-and-DJ-hating title track, only available here. Then, mark your calendar to snag physical copies of all three Diamond Boiz releases at the big party at Club Kaliente (inside Laguna’s Mexican Bar and Grill at 16th and Champa) on Nov. 27.
Please note that downloads offered via Steal This Track are intended to whet your appetite, and are NOT CD-quality recordings. If you want those, please support the artists by buying their music and/or seeing them live.
