GREELEY — Convicted murderer Shawna Nelson’s fight to get a new trial took a turn this week when her court-appointed lawyer accused the district attorney handling the case of ethical violations, the Greeley Tribune reports.

Nelson filed a request for a new trial on Sept. 22, 2009. Since then, a court-appointed attorney from Denver has been investigating her claims that attorneys overlooked other suspects in the murder of her romantic rival, Heather Garraus, in 2007.

Defense attorney Mark Burton of Denver filed a request for sanctions on Monday against Larimer County Deputy District Attorney Cliff Reidel, who is handling the case.
