MOUNT VERNON, Ohio—An Ohio Dairy Queen manager says a slain co-worker loved her job and therefore she knew right away that something was wrong when the woman didn’t show up for work last week.

Valerie Haythorn told The Associated Press on Friday that the lights were on and Tina Herrmann’s truck was in the driveway when she drove by Herrmann’s house that night. When Herrmann missed a second day, Haythorn says she went inside the home and called authorities.

Haythorn declined to say what she saw, but authorities say it was during that visit that a significant amount of blood was discovered.

On Thursday, investigators found the bodies of Herrmann, her son and her friend. An unemployed tree-trimmer is accused of kidnapping Herrmann’s 13-year-old daughter and helped them find the remains of the other three.
