WASHINGTON — The Justice Department has dropped its investigation of Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., who was under scrutiny for his efforts to keep secret his affair with a part- time staff member, Ensign’s attorney said Wednesday.
Attorney Paul Coggins said he was informed that federal investigators have “no plans” to bring charges. They were investigating whether Ensign had done anything illegal while trying to get the woman’s husband — also an Ensign staffer — lobbying work.
