Sen. Mark Udall on Tuesday called President Barack Obama’s compromise with congressional Republicans to extend tax cuts for everyone “objectionable” and “unbalanced.”

“While I still want to examine the details, my first response to this proposal is to be opposed,” the Colorado Democrat said. “With our debt out of control, our troops battling two wars, and American families struggling every week in the recession, extending tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires makes no sense.”

The office of Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., said he was still reviewing the deal.

During his recent election campaign, however, Bennet said he would favor a compromise allowing everyone to enjoy one more year of tax cuts during the recession.

“His priorities remain extending tax cuts for the middle class, extending unemployment insurance for Coloradans who are struggling to find their way in this savage economy,” said Bennet spokesman Adam Bozzi, noting the senator wants to ensure “a final agreement can be reached in the remaining few weeks before the tax cuts expire.”
