DENVER—A winter storm is unleashing snow and wind in Colorado’s mountains, dumping up to a half foot of snow and closing a long stretch of Interstate 70 west of Denver.
The snow is expected to continue through Friday night with accumulations of more than a foot in some spots. The National Weather Service says winds will reach 20 to 35 mph with gusts up to 65 mph.
I-70 from about 30 miles west of Denver to Vail was closed in both directions for hours because of poor visibility. Parts of the highway were reopened late Friday.
The Denver area and foothills are expected to stay dry, but strong winds are forecast for the Front Range and eastern Colorado. Dry, windy weather fueled at least two grass fires on the plains Friday.
