SAN ANTONIO — A new study adds to the controversy over using Avastin for breast cancer. Doctors say women who received the Genentech drug before cancer surgery fared no better than those who did not.

It is the first study to test Avastin for early breast cancer. More than 1,900 women were given standard chemotherapy and half also got Avastin for several months. Tumors disappeared in nearly one in five women regardless of which treatment they received.

Avastin is approved to treat breast cancer, but the Food and Drug Administration is considering revoking that because the drug does not meaningfully improve survival. The Associated Press
