ST. MORITZ, SWITZERLAND — We had only one race over the weekend because the super-G was canceled because of weather, but I was really happy with the race we had.
I had my best giant slalom result in almost two years, finishing seventh.
Last year I finished only two of the seven GS races we had on the World Cup, and I didn’t finish the GS at the Olympics.
My first run I skied a bit conservatively and “over-skied” the course. I was too round with my line, I wasn’t attacking the line enough. I wasn’t going straight enough. It was tentative skiing, too relaxed, too conservative, not pushing my line enough.
But in the second run I really stepped it up. I skied a lot more like I’ve been doing in training. I’ve been fast in training but hadn’t been able to put it together on race day. But this time, I had a lot more confidence. I skied more aggressively.
I could have skied a lot better, but I was happy to finish with a solid run.
It was disappointing that we didn’t get to race the super-G. It was a tough course, and I like challenges like that. I really think I figured out the right line for that day, and I was excited to race.
We will make it up this week in Val d’Isere. I’ll be wearing the red leader’s bib because I won the only super-G we’ve had so far this season.
