DENVER—Colorado ranks 11th in the number of deaths from child abuse or neglect, according to figures cited by a national group calling for the federal government to do more to protect children.
The National Coalition to End Child Abuse Deaths noted disparities in child abuse or neglect deaths rates between states, with Florida having the worst rate per 100,000 children at 4.62 in 2008. Colorado’s death rate was at 2.65, up from 1.77 in 2001.
Among reforms called for the by group are an increase in federal funding of between $3 billion to $5 billion, an increase in home visits of those known to child protection services, and an end to confidentiality laws that prevent sharing of information between jurisdictions and the media.
