Bob Bradley, coach of the U.S. men’s national soccer team, announced Tuesday that Rapids midfielder Jeff Larentowicz, goalkeeper Matt Pickens and defenders Anthony Wallace and Marvell Wynne are among 24 players who will attend the Team USA training camp for workouts beginning Jan. 4 in Carson, Calif.
Team USA will be preparing for its first match of 2011, a friendly against Chile on Jan. 22 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
WCHA salutes CC duo.
Colorado College’s Nick Dineen and Dakota Eveland are the Western Collegiate Hockey Association’s offensive player of the week and rookie of the week, respectively.
Dineen, a junior center from Omaha and the Sioux Falls Stampede, produced the first hat trick of his collegiate career in the Tigers’ 5-2 victory over Nebraska- Omaha on Saturday in Colorado Springs. Eveland, a freshman left wing from Anaheim, Calif., and the Omaha Lancers, contributed two assists to CC’s sixth consecutive win.
At the Christmas break, the Tigers are 11-8-1 overall and 8-6 (fifth place) in the WCHA.
RMAC honors Mines star again.
Colorado Mines’ Brecca Gaffney, a 6-foot-1 senior forward from Northridge High School, is the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s offensive player of the week in women’s basketball for the second time this season.
Gaffney averaged 27 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists for the Orediggers (5-5, 1-4 RMAC) in two conference home games last week. She shot 51.4 percent from the field, helping Mines split the two games.
In a 75-67 loss to Nebraska-Kearney, Gaffney scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
In an 82-72 victory over Chadron State, she had 26 points, seven rebounds, four assists, three blocked shots and two steals.
Gaffney leads the RMAC in scoring, averaging 18.7 points. She’s also averaging 8.2 rebounds.
