GREELEY — A high- ranking Greeley-Evans School District 6 administrator was in jail Tuesday facing possible charges of third- degree assault after a standoff in his home last week involving the Greeley Police Department and its SWAT team, The Greeley Tribune reported.

Paul Urioste, 45, the director of elementary education for District 6, was arrested Monday, The Tribune said. He appeared in court Tuesday.

Urioste, who is involved in a divorce, asked Judge William Fox to consider a personal-recognizance bond, but prosecutor Natalie Mitchell told Fox that the circumstances in the case warranted more. She said the alleged assault involved a weapon and domestic violence and happened while the victim was calling 911.

Fox set bail at $4,000.

Roger Fiedler, District 6 director of communications, told the newspaper that Urioste has been placed on paid administrative leave pending further investigation.

Police were called to Urioste’s west Greeley home Dec. 22 after his wife called 911 to report an assault. When police arrived, Urioste had barricaded himself into his home and was threatening suicide. The Greeley SWAT team was called to assist.
