DALLAS — Caron Butler could be out at least a couple of months because of a knee injury, a tough blow for the already ailing Mavericks.

A person with direct knowledge of the situation said the initial diagnosis is a torn patellar tendon. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no MRI had yet been performed, the team was waiting until it was.

Butler went down during a loss at Milwaukee on Saturday night. He was coming off a season-high, 30-point performance the previous game while picking up the offensive slack because of an injury to leading scorer Dirk Nowitzki.

Dallas coach Rick Carlisle had no new information about the injury before Sunday’s game at Cleveland. Carlisle said he wasn’t sure when the MRI will take place.

Footnotes.

Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo returned to the starting lineup against the Raptors after missing seven games because of a sprained left ankle.

• Anthony Tolliver practiced with the Timberwolves but did not travel with the team to Boston for tonight’s game against the Celtics.
