A child was gravely injured early Wednesday, and his mother’s 30-year-old boyfriend was arrested on criminal charge of felony child abuse resulting in bodily injury.

Police aren’t further specifying the relationship between Theodore I. Madrid of Aurora and the child, the nature of the child’s injuries or his age. The injuries are being characterized as life-threatening, and the boy remains in critical condition at an unspecified local hospital, said Detective Bob Friel.

Friel said the case is still under investigation.

A family friend who asked not to be identified said the 4-year-old child had been body-slammed.

Madrid is being held in the Arapahoe County Jail on $500,000. A judge issued a restraining order in the case, but records do not specify the child or other people he must stay away from.

Fire medics and police were called to the apartment in the 100 block of Dayton Street just after 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. Madrid and the child’s mother were both home.

Besides alcohol and driving offenses on his criminal record, Madrid was found guilty of disorderly conduct with a sentence enhancement for domestic violence in 2007, records show.

He was placed on 12 months probation, which was later extended by six months, according to court records.
