MONTROSE, Colo.—State wildlife officials have moved 15 desert bighorn sheep from one part of the Dolores River Canyon in southwest Colorado to another to increase a small herd.
The Division of Wildlife moved the sheep in December from the Upper Dolores Canyon, where the herd has grown to about 150 animals from an original 50 relocated from Nevada 20 years ago. Fifteen of the sheep from that herd were moved to the Middle Dolores Canyon.
State wildlife biologist Scott Wait says the herd in the upper part of the canyon has been growing, but the other herd hasn’t done as well.
If the 15 relocated animals do well, biologists might move in another 15 next year.
