MILWAUKEE — Dwight Buycks scored a career-high 21 points and Marquette made 15-of-21 3-point attempts in a 79-57 upset of No. 9 Notre Dame on Monday night.

Buycks hit all five of his 3-point attempts and Jae Crowder added 18 points for Marquette (12-5), which put on its best long-distance shooting performance in 10 years.

The Fighting Irish (14-3) shot 39.6 percent overall, including 3-of-16 from 3-point range.

• Virginia senior Mike Scott, the team’s scoring (15.9) and rebounding (10.2) leader, will have a second surgery on his left ankle and miss the remainder of the season.

• Louisiana Tech sophomore swingman Brandon Gibson will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn left ACL.

• Clemson announced tonight’s schedule game against Georgia Tech will be played Wednesday because of winter weather.

Rivera atop of Panthers’ list

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Ron Rivera emerged as the leading candidate to be Carolina’s next coach when the San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator arrived for a second interview with the Panthers.

The Panthers are looking for the fourth coach in their 16-year history after firing John Fox and an NFL-worst 2-14 season.

• Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said he’s hopeful linebacker Lofa Tatupu (concussion) and receiver Ben Obomanu (shoulder) will be able to practice by the end of the week after suffering injuries during Saturday’s victory over the New Orleans Saints.

• The Cleveland Browns have a meeting scheduled with New York Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell today as they look to replace fired coach Eric Mangini. Fewell also interviewed in Carolina and Denver.

Reds sign Renteria, Lewis

CINCINNATI — World Series MVP Edgar Renteria agreed to a one- year deal to back up Paul Janish at shortstop for the Cincinnati Reds.

Renteria, who will turn 35 during the season, became a free agent after the San Francisco Giants declined his $9.5 million contract option. His tiebreaking three-run homer off Texas Rangers left-hander Cliff Lee helped the Giants win the World Series.

The Reds also signed left-handed-hitting outfielder Fred Lewis to a one-year deal, giving them a candidate to bat leadoff. Lewis batted .262 with the Toronto Blue Jays last season, leading the club with 17 steals.

• Infielder Jason Bartlett and the San Diego Padres agreed to an $11 million, two-year contract that avoided salary arbitration.

• The Chicago White Sox agreed to a $4 million, two-year deal with free-agent reliever Will Ohman.
