A dog was killed by a car today as it ran away from a burning home.

Neighbors called West Metro Fire at about 11:45 a.m. when they saw smoke coming from the home at 12460 W. Quincy Ave.

When firefighters arrived, heavy flames were engulfing the home, said Cindy Matthews, a spokeswoman for West Metro Fire.

Neighbors told firefighters that they thought there may be a person trapped in the basement.

Fire officials opened the door to fight the fire and look for anyone who may be trapped inside, and as they opened the door a dog ran out into the street and was hit by a car on a nearby highway.

The dog did not survive, but Matthews said firefighters did rescue a snake, three lizards, three cats and two other dogs.

No people were in the home.

The house sustained heavy damage. Matthews said the roof and the wall on the south side of the home collapsed.

A 22-year-old woman and her mother were living in the home and will be staying with friends.
