GUNNINSON, Colo.—The U.S. Forest Service is sponsoring two open houses on plans for water monitoring by a company that wants to explore for molybdenum (ma-LIB’-de-nem) at an old mining site near Crested Butte in western Colorado.
The Forest Service has scheduled open houses Jan. 25 at Western State College in Gunnison and Jan. 26 at the Lodge at Mountaineer Square in Crested Butte.
Agency officials will discuss a proposal by U.S. Energy Corp. to gather information about groundwater water levels and quality before any mining begins. The Wyoming-based company would drill monitoring wells and monitor stream flows.
The company says it’s trying to determine if a mine on Mount Emmons near Crested Butte would be economically feasible. Area residents oppose the mine.
