BROOMFIELD — A fire that broke out at Highlander Apartment Complex on Sunday afternoon left three units with significant damage, making them uninhabitable.

Wendy Forbes, a spokesperson with North Metro Fire, said a call came in at 2:40 p.m. that a fire had started in a first-floor unit of the apartments at 1005 E. 9th Ave.

Forbes said the fire was started by a cigarette that was left unattended. The woman who was smoking the cigarette was on oxygen. Forbes said that caused the fire to spread more quickly.
