DURANGO, Colo.—The slowdown in the economy and a corresponding reduction in work in La Plata County’s Building, Planning and Geographic Information Systems departments has led to layoffs, which were announced in an emotional e-mail.
The Durango Herald reports that county Manager Shawn Nau told employees that they’re losing very respected and talented individuals and that laying off friends and co-workers isn’t an easy process.
In addition to seven layoffs, Nau announced the elimination of another unfilled position and a reduction in hours for three additional positions.
With the latest round of cuts, a total of 18.75 full-time positions have been eliminated in the 2010 and 2011 budgets, representing a savings of $1.4 million.
