PROVO, Utah — Jimmer Fredette scored 43 points and ninth-ranked BYU beat No. 4 San Diego State 71-58 on Wednesday night, handing the Aztecs their first loss of the season.

The loss by the Aztecs (20-1, 5-1) leaves No. 1 Ohio State (21-0) as the only unbeaten team in the nation.

The first matchup of top-10 teams in the Mountain West Conference was tight from the start, with 15 lead changes and seven ties.

The Cougars (20-1, 6-0) trailed 31-30 at halftime thanks to a late 3-pointer by San Diego State’s Kawhi Leonard. But BYU, now alone atop the Mountain West, turned it on in the second half. With the score tied at 44, the Cougars went on a 16-8 run to take a 60-52 lead with 4:12 remaining.

Wyoming 69, UNLV 61

LAS VEGAS — Reigning MWC player of the week Hillary Carlson scored a career-high 34 points to lead the Cowgirls (15-4, 5-1) over the Rebels (9-12, 2-5).

Jade Kennedy’s 3-pointer with just under three minutes remaining ended a UNLV run and gave the Cowgirls a 61-53 advantage.

Kennedy finished with a season-high 18 points. Chaundra Sewell added a career-high 12 rebounds and eight assists.

NORMAN, Okla. — Danielle Adams scored 31 points, including the decisive free throws with 7.6 seconds left as the Aggies (18-1, 6-0 Big 12) won their 12th game in a row.
