DENVER—At the annual SnowSports Industries America Snow Show this week, gear makers showed off new shapes in skis and snowboards, and more split boards, snowshoes and setups to reach ungroomed slopes in the backcountry.

Retailers are in a better mood now that recession-weary consumers are starting to spend again, and spurts of heavy snow around the country haven’t hurt.

Shops and manufacturers at the SIA Snow Show in Denver this week said the new snowboarding movie “Deeper” is helping to fuel interest in the backcountry. It showed big mountain rider Jeremy Jones making grueling treks up steep, remote mountain walls and then snowboarding down, miles from anywhere.
