Rescuers were evacuating a 20-year-old woman who sustained multiple injuries Saturday morning after she slid about 100 feet down an icy slope on Longs Peak.
The woman fell between Chasm Lake and Peacock Pool on the eastern side of the mountain, said Larry Frederick, spokesman for Rocky Mountain National Park. Other hikers who were with her at the time used a SPOT satellite tracker to signal for help. Park rangers received the distress signal and responded immediately, he said.
Two park rangers reached two members of the party around 10 a.m. and were led to the woman, whose name had not been released, Frederick said. The rangers performed emergency treatment for multiple injuries.
The woman was alert and conscious. Additional rangers were hiking to the area, but Frederick said it might be dark before the woman is carried off the mountain. Kirk Mitchell, The Denver Post
