Two children playing with matches started a fire that destroyed a mobile home in Thornton on Sunday, authorities said.
Thornton Fire Department spokesman Roger Sampsel said firefighters responding to a 1:30 p.m. call from a mobile-home park at 2100 W. 100th Ave. discovered that the burning home was in an enclosed space and difficult to get to. He said firefighters put out the blaze, but the home was a total loss.
Sampsel said he spoke to two children younger than 10 who neighbors said were playing in the area just before the fire. Sampsel said the pair confessed to being the cause.
“It was them that started the fire, carelessly playing with matches,” Sampsel said.
Sampsel said the children did not live in the destroyed home but did live in the same park. Their ages will likely prevent them from facing criminal charges, Sampsel said.
Sampsel said two other homes had melted siding.
The names of the children who ignited the blaze were not released. There were no injuries.
