Oklahoma-based tanning-salon chain At the Beach has agreed to pay $350,000 in restitution and fines to settle a Colorado complaint that it misled consumers about its tanning contracts, Attorney General John Suthers’ office announced Monday.
The state alleged salon employees had misled consumers into believing they could cancel their contracts at any time, failing to disclose that any cancellation required payment of half the amount of the unused portion of their membership.
According to the settlement, future sales must be recorded and consumers must initial various parts of the contract.
Suthers’ office estimates about 300 customers will share in about $100,000. An additional $75,000 will go toward customers who file verifiable complaints against the tanning chain, which already has refunded more than $45,000 to other customers. The Denver Post
