A suspected marijuana deal gone bad caused a chain of events that included a fight for a gun, a missed shot at close range and a car driving into a Loveland storefront Monday night, police said.

Police said two men — Terrence Straughter, 21, and Cody Brubaker, 20, both from Loveland — intended to rob a man they had said they wanted to buy pot from in the store’s parking lot.

During a struggle for a pistol, the driver put the car in gear and it rolled into the front of the store in the 100 block of East 37th Street. The would-be robbers got out of the car as one of them fired a shot at the driver and ran away, police said.

No one was injured in the shooting or crash, police said. The driver was not named by police.

Slaughter was arrested in Greeley today and charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, possession of a weapon by a previous offender, and felony menacing.

Brubaker is still at large. Anyone with information can call 970-962-2248 or the Loveland Police Department’s tip line, 970-962-2032.
