A federal judge in Denver has dismissed the claims of a convicted terrorist that his detention restrictions are too severe.

Mohamed Rashed al-Owhali, who was convicted in 2001 of murder for his role in the 1998 bombing of the U.S. embassy in Kenya, sued the Justice Department in 2007, saying the “special administration measures” under which he is held at the federal Supermax prison in Florence violate his rights. Among other things, the measures restrict what he can read and to whom he can write, prevent him from having contact with any other inmates and require monitoring of his phone calls and visits with family.

Daniel Manville, al-Owhali’s attorney, said the measures were tightened over the years without federal officials providing a reason or an opportunity for a hearing.
