The superintendent of the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo has resigned to return to psychiatric work.
John M. DeQuardo, 53, has been superintendent of the institute since July 1, 2007. His resignation will be effective Feb. 11, according to a release from the Colorado Department of Human Services.
DeQuardo will go on to work at the admissions unit of the Robert L. Hawkins Institute for Forensic Psychiatry as a psychiatrist.
Teresa Bernal was named interim superintendent until a permanent replacement can be found.
Bernal had a long career at the health institute, and retired in 2009, but returned in late 2010 as part of an improvement program at the site.
