Here’s an antidote to the relentless celebration of President Ronald Reagan’s birthday centennial on Sunday: the new e-book version of Paul Slansky’s 1989 “The Clothes Have No Emperor.”
Political blogger Wonkette endorsed Slansky’s book, a collection of news reports assembled during the Reagan presidency, as “the only honest history of the Ronald Reagan 1980s.”
It’s cynical, bitter and viciously funny in the same vein as Esquire Magazine’s celebrated “Dubious Achievements” award commentary, much of which was contributed by Slansky in the 1970s and ’80s. And while “The Clothes Have No Emperor” will win no converts from the Tea Party, the text is largely extracted straight from headlines and newsfeeds.
