FORT COLLINS, Colo.—A proposal to ban the sale of animals at pet stores in Fort Collins has fallen short of the number of signatures needed to put it on the April municipal ballot.
But supporters have until Feb. 16 to come up with more signatures of registered voters. Colorado State University student Laure Molitor is heading the petition drive and she says supporters will work hard the next two weekends to get enough signatures.
Petitions turned in last week had 1,135 valid signatures, but 2,517 are needed to ask voters to considering banning the sale of animals at Fort Collins pet stores. Molitor says the goal is to discourage puppy mills selling animals to pet stores.
The breeding businesses have come under fire for poor treatment of animals.
