DENVER—A school-breakfast subsidy facing a possible budget cut would be protected under a new proposal at the Colorado Capitol.
Democrats introduced House Bill 1227 on Monday. It would set aside almost $125,000 to make sure the state keeps paying for “Smart Start” breakfasts.
The breakfasts face an uncertain future toward the end of this school year because of budget cuts.
Nearly every House Democrat signed onto the measure.
The budget-writing Joint Budget Committee voted last month to start charging some low-income students 30 cents for school breakfasts because money for the program was running out.
A final decision hasn’t been made on the funding. Democrats have vowed to find a way to preserve the breakfast program, which serves about 2.3 million meals a year to about 56,000 eligible children.
