A Denver police officer involved in the investigation of a high-profile hit-and-run case is facing a suspension and an internal-affairs probe.
Det. Jay Estrada has officially been on vacation since late December but will be suspended when he returns Tuesday, Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.
Jackson declined to reveal the nature of the allegations involving Estrada, but CBS4 reported Monday that he may have mishandled information in the Dec. 9 hit-and-run involving Laura Gorham.
Gorham, who was pregnant, was run over as she crossed the street in the Stapleton neighborhood. Her unborn child did not survive.
The Denver Post has learned that Estrada’s phone records were examined as part of the internal investigation.
No arrests have been made. However, a search warrant has been executed and DNA testing is under way on a hair that was recovered by investigators.
That hair was recovered from a vehicle that has been identified as possibly being involved in the incident, The Post has learned.
Estrada was assigned to the traffic-accident investigations team.
