AURORA — What does it take for a high-school basketball coach to win 600 games in a career?
According to Ken Shaw, whose Regis Jesuit boys whipped Heritage 94-39 at home Tuesday night to put him into select company, it’s a balance of patience, longevity and developing talent. “A new group of kids that add to a season’s newness and freshness” and “a wife who’s a saint” doesn’t hurt.
“This is not an individual achievement,” Shaw said.
Raiders center Drew Dyer, part of Shaw’s past two title teams at Regis Jesuit, said, “It’s awesome. He deserves it.”
Shaw (600-209), who also coached title-winning teams at Yuma (1981) and Sterling (1984), began his 35-year career when America was celebrating its bicentennial. The former three-sport star at Merino, who used to tape Los Angeles Lakers games off AM radio, always knew his calling.
“I just love the game, and the connection with the kids is what has kept me going,” he said.
