The Denver Post won the award for General Excellence in its class Friday night at the annual Colorado Associated Press Editors and Reporters contest.

Photographer Craig F. Walker of The Post won Best of Show for his series “American Soldier.”

The Greeley Tribune and the Vail Daily won General Excellence in their categories.

The contest covers work done by Colorado Associated Press member newspapers between Sept. 1, 2009, and Aug. 31, 2010.

Overall, The Post won 24 of 27 first-place awards as well as 38 second- and third-place awards. Two of the awards went to staffers from The Post’s “Viva” supplement.

Awards were presented in three divisions: Division I for papers under 15,000 circulation, Division II for circulation of 15,000 to 30,000, and Division III for circulation over 30,000.
