Several dozen chanting, sign-waving demonstrators calling for the ouster of Libyan leader Moammar Khadafy gathered on the steps of the state Capitol in Denver on Saturday as civil unrest in the North African nation continues to leave scores dead and injured.

“This is a desperate plea,” said Del Elmagbari, a Denver native of Libyan descent. Elmagbari, 33, choked back tears as he described the violent government actions in the country where his grandparents still live. Elmagbari led the crowd in chants of “Khadafy has to go!”

“He’s using live rounds on innocent protesters,” Elmagbari said. “We want to show the world we are in solidarity.”

Elmagbari said American supporters of the Libyan people are doing what they can by making themselves heard. He said the world needs to know that the Libyan protests won’t go away.
