COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—The Colorado Springs City Council has taken a step toward officially opening a steep, rugged trail to the public, although thousands of hikers already use it.
The Manitou (MAN’-uh-too) Incline, an abandoned cable car route west of Colorado Springs, rises more than 2,000 feet in a mile. Railroad ties serve as makeshift steps.
The Gazette of Colorado Springs reports that as many as 500,000 people a year hike the incline, although it crosses parcels of land with different owners who haven’t granted public access.
On Tuesday, the City Council approved a plan to legalize the hikers and manage the trail. It’s not clear what the next step is, or when the trail would be formally opened.
