The three-time defending NCAA champion University of Denver ski team will not have Leif Kristian Haugen on hand to defend its title after the junior opted to represent his native Norway on the World Cup circuit, the school announced Thursday.

Haugen, who placed second in the giant slalom and third in the slalom at last year’s NCAA championships, finished 16th in GS at the world championships on Feb. 18 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

Rapids’ kickoff luncheon provides opportunity for fans.

MLS commissioner Don Garber will be the keynote speaker at the Rapids’ kickoff luncheon March 16 at the Denver Marriott City Center.

The luncheon is an opportunity for fans to meet players and coaches who will open defense of the team’s MLS Cup on March 19 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park against the expansion Portland Timbers. The Timbers are coached by former Rapids star John Spencer.

Tickets for the luncheon are $80 for individuals, $800 for corporate tables seating 10 and $1,000 for patron tables including a player or coach. Proceeds will benefit Kroenke Sports Charities. Info and tickets: 303-727-3517.

• Former Rapids midfielder Chris Henderson and the late Glenn Myernick, who coached the team from 1997-2000, have been nominated for selection to the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

Henderson played for the club from 1996-98 and 2002-05. He was the team’s MVP in 1996 and holds team records for assists, minutes played, shots and shots on goal.

Other nominees who played for the Rapids include Raul Diaz Arce, Robin Fraser, Steve Trittschuh, Carlos Valderrama and Peter Vermes.
