Like Colorado Sounds?

Casual fans of the local music scene are keenly aware that things have been poppin’ for quite sometime. However, most people outside of our coordinates think we still chew on straw and wear shit-kickers. Despite the validity to some of those stereotypes, would like to prove those naysayers wrong. SLS has created a contemporary love mix tape for Colorado music in compilation available for free download . Reverb caught up with the rabble-rouser from the School of Mines, Tim Weilert, to talk about the music scene here in town.

Why all the love for local music?

“There may be a multitude of factors at play here. On one hand I simply love live music and being able to see local bands is far easier/more affordable than spending all of my time and money hitting up the big national touring acts. Also, I’ve been able to make some great connections with musicians and promoters throughout Colorado — it’s the kind of stuff that you can only really get on a localized scene. The other part may be that music in Colorado (at least as long as I have been covering it) has gotten better and better. There’s no shortage of new, quality projects that have their own unique spaces within the larger context.”

What was the inspiration behind the compilation?

“As the title suggests, this is the second compilation release from Something Like Sound. Our first compilation came out on Halloween 2009 and had a modest reception. With the new release I wanted to expand on the original compilation concept to include more bands and a few unreleased tracks. With both compilations the goal has been to connect music fans (be they hardcore or casual) with what is going on in Colorado. Specifically, as a Mines student, I wanted to have something to give to friends and colleagues so they’d actually know the bands I’m always blathering on about.”

How do you plan spreading the word down in Austin during SXSW about the comp?

“I am planning a classic handbill/flier campaign that will promote the compilation, the blog, and Colorado music in general. I’m sending my template out to several of the featured bands who happen to be going to SXSW so they can have a giveaway.”

Any new items you’re working on that fans can expect in the near future?

“Currently I’m booking a graduation party/show in May. I feel it would be fitting to have a shin dig with a few bands and a few friends at one of my favorite spots downtown. It will be a celebration of the end of my academic career and a reflection on how far my journalistic experiences have taken me. In addition to that, I just finished the newest release for my cassette tape label (Buckingham Pie Group) — a split between Flashlights and Force Publique. It’s the first in a series of splits, the next one will be Safe Boating Is No Accident and SAUNA.”

Nathaniel Rateliff is kind of a big deal across the pond

is still spreading the gospel from his debut album, “In Memory of Loss,” but the rave reviews keep coming in. . Also, Metro (a free London daily), gushes about the Colorado (by way of Missouri) troubadour as much as one of the Mumfords.
