A Texas trooper says intense winter storms have delayed an investigation into a crash involving Sen. Suzanne Williams, D-Aurora, that killed a pregnant woman.
A grand jury will not address allegations against Williams until the Texas Department of Public Safety completes an accident reconstruction investigation, said Hartley County District Attorney David Green.
Green said that in Texas most felony cases go before a grand jury instead of a preliminary hearing, as is customary in Colorado.
He originally planned to convene the grand jury in January, but it was postponed until February. Now it will likely be delayed several more weeks.
Trooper Gabriel Medrano said the troopers involved in the investigation had to postpone meetings because of snowstorms.
Brianna Michelle Gomez, 30, of Amarillo, Texas, who was seven months pregnant, was killed in the Dec. 26 crash. The woman’s son, Curran Blaec Gomez, survived after being delivered at a hospital. Williams’ son, Todd, was seriously injured in the crash after he was ejected along with one of his sons.
Williams’ vehicle veered into the southbound traffic lane of U.S. 385 while crossing a bridge near Channing, in the Texas Panhandle, according to a preliminary state report. She crashed head-on into the GMC Yukon carrying Gomez, the report said.
The report said that in addition to having passengers not wearing seat belts, Williams did not have proof of auto insurance.
